MagiWOL 2.00

After really long time, new version of MagiWOL is out.

Area of expertise for this program is waking computers via Wake-On-LAN messages. All standard features in that kind of program are present here also. Additionally there is total reconfigurability of broadcast address (per device - necessary for older equipment) and ability to wake computers protected with Secure-On password.

Notable changes for this version include:

  • completely new user interface
  • added command line support
  • full support for Windows Vista and Windows 7 (RC)
  • Copy/Paste
  • Import from computer names and IP ranges

You can download it here now. At later time, you will be able to find it also at my home page.

P.S. Although interface looks simple, for those who wish to access full power of program there is menu hidden behind press of Alt key (or configurable to be always visible via Options).

  1. Hi,
I’m looking for a program to send WOL-packets and save a list of MAC-adresses. This works very well.
But I have two networks with router and i can’t wake the computers in the other net. How does the broadcast option work?
    Thanks

    1. Hi,

wake-on-lan packets are always broadcasted, only difference is to which address. 255.255.255.255 is almost always a safe bet.

In your case I would say that router is blocking all wake-on-lan traffic. If your other network has IPs such as 192.168.2.x, you may try to put broadcast address (for this computers only) to 192.168.2.255. Router just may forward packet in that case.

If that fails, router is pretty much incapable of forwarding such packets between networks. While this may be design decision, often you can find router configuration options to solve this also.

      I hope this helps.

  2. Hello Josip,

thanks for your efforts releasing such good software.
I have a question though on Magiwol.
For our School with about 150 Windows PC I would like to use the command line tool for waking up the Computers in the morning.
I couldn’t find how to configure the “file” to commit the MAC addresses.

    Thanks for any help
    Jens

  3. Hi,

You can use GUI to generate .magiwol file. That file can then be used with command line tool. It is essentially just an XML file.
